This may be one of my favorite questions thus far. It’s
simple and broad and I’m eager to answer it, so I’m just going to type my many
thoughts away. The question was from a lovely girl named Courtney. She asked, “How
do you know God exists (and that your church is the true church) in your everyday
life? What makes you BELIEVE that?”
First, I have to start by saying I have faith and that’s how
I’ve had the crazy amounts of miracles happen in my life. You have to start by
having faith. I did a post on it once, read it here. Second, I couldn’t help
but think of the moments in just the past week that have made me feel Heavenly
Father’s hand in my life and in the lives of those around me. There are
several, but I want to focus in on three specific events!
On Thursday night, Mr. Schroeder wasn’t feeling good, so he
fell asleep. I went into my ‘music room’ and began playing the piano. It was all
fun and games, until I decided to take a deep breath, listen to the silence for
about 60 seconds, and go back to playing. I was struggling playing a certain
song without any mistakes at all. After the deep breath, I can’t even explain
the overwhelming feeling I got. It was small and simple but right then and
there, I have never felt the love my Heavenly Father has for me in one small
instance the way I did then. As I started my song over again, I decided to
focus in more on the Spirit. When the song was over, with tears streaming down
my face, I realized that I had not only played the song beautifully with no
mistakes, I had played it with the spirit in the music, and that was very
beautiful to me!
I already wrote about the choking incident that Mr.Schroeder had. Ever since that happened, I have had recurring nightmares about
him choking. It was the scariest moment of my life thus far. The fact that I
had been having a really rough week, and I got down on my knees, and prayed to
Heavenly Father, asking him for a wake-up call, was absolutely crazy to me.
People ask for proof. And I do believe in proof. MIRACLES. But here’s the catch
– you have to have faith. Otherwise you will never see the proof.
Third, this gave me super hard core chills. I don’t know
this girl, but I saw her Facebook page called “Pray for Lexi” and had to ‘like
it’ because I was interested in hearing about her progress. Anyways, this
adorable girl named Lexi was longboarding to campus at BYU, and was struck by a
car. She was in a coma and her doctors told her family they should prepare to
say their goodbyes, as there’s only a 3% chance she would even make it out
alive, and if she did, she’d have severe brain damage. I was following her
Facebook Page and after being in a coma, her family posted this:
Can you say “Holy cow?” I got instant chills when I read
that. If you don’t know what fasting entails in the LDS church, you can click
here to read more about it. Now, Lexi is fully awake and learning to talk and
walk all over again. She’s making drastic progress with little steps. I kept
asking myself, “How can you say the church isn’t true after something like THAT?”
So to answer this individual’s question, I believe that God exists because
after working for the faith, I have seen and experienced miracles. I have asked
for a wake-up call from Heavenly Father and he has given me one. Each of these
crazy experiences happened just this week. I don’t think many people realize
all of the miracles and tender moments happening around them until they strive
to notice. Miracles happen. And that’s a major part of how I know Heavenly
Father is there and that He is listening.
